Adult Education

English Classes

Our adult English classes are a multi-level instructional program designed to develop proficiency in the comprehension, listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the English language. Classes are taught by volunteers, and instruction is provided in English. We utilize a high-quality curricula from Cambridge Press for all five levels of classroom instruction throughout the academic year from September to May. All levels of English are offered on Monday/Wednesday Nights and Tuesday/Thursday mornings. In 2022-23, 72.5% of our adult students advanced to the next level of English.

During the summer we offer supplemental reading classes for intermediate level students. Evening classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30pm. Morning classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-11:30am.

Each year we seek interested volunteers who have a passion for enriching the lives of the Hispanic immigrant population of the Bachman Lake area and for improving the surrounding community through their participation in our programs. If you would like to volunteer for ESL or any of our adult education programs please contact the director Steve Tenpenny.

Computer Literacy

We also offer computer literacy courses. These classes teach typing and basic computer skills, familiarizing students with the use of email, web browsing, and basic wordprocessing and spreadsheet usage. Computer literacy classes are taught by our own staff, but volunteer opportunities are available for classroom assistants who are familiar with the basics of computer usage. Plans are underway for offering GED classes through partnerships with other local organizations that offer remote learning opportunities. We periodically offer financial literacy classes as well.
